Close to 25,000 Lost Electricity in Queensland and Victoria Following Intense Storms

Nearly 25,000 homes in Queensland's southeast found themselves without power on the start of the week after intense storm systems impacted the region, producing powerful gusts reaching 109km/h.

Large Ice Stones and Broad Destruction

Locals observed substantial frozen pellets as large as 7cm in some areas. The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed that different parts across Queensland had been affected by significant hail.

Emergency crews were focused on reestablishing power throughout the impacted areas, with nearly 70 crews deployed to handle the numerous electricity disruptions.

Southern State's Climate Difficulties

Meanwhile, nearly one thousand residents in Victoria also faced power outages after Melbourne saw its most precipitation in a year and a half.

Emergency response teams handled nearly 600 requests for assistance across the region, mostly for structural issues but also for collapsed vegetation and water accumulation.

  • The Werribee area - recorded substantial destruction
  • Hoppers Crossing - various rescue reports
  • Wyndham region - nearly 180 emergency requests

At one point on Sunday, more than twenty-eight thousand power users in Victoria were without power.

Meteorological Predictions

Moist weather were forecast to persist along much of Queensland's east this week as a low-pressure trough continued to attract humidity against the coast.

The following day was forecast to be the most rainy day, with ongoing thunderstorm potential expected across different parts of both regions.

Safety Concern

Health officials cautioned that there was an higher risk of weather-related respiratory issues across the state's northern country region, particularly given the current weather patterns.
