An Compassion of People We Don't Know: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Land the Role That Changed My Life

During the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to Europe with a friend. Since my travel mate was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we got some food, sat down, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He asked me what I my profession was, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – close to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I should apply for a role with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The man from Iraq came up to me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but right away informed my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a place where anything feels possible – she responded: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his identity, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I lacked the courage or nerve to contact anyone at an prestigious college and ask for a job. And, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that role at the university led me to a job in Zurich where I encountered my beautiful French husband, with whom I am raising four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.

Can you recall the Kindest Gesture a Someone You Didn't Know Has Shown for You?

Whether it's making your day to changing your life, we would love to know random meetings that have stuck with you.
